Ethan's LEGO Party

For Ethan’s 6th birthday party, we finally settled on a LEGO theme - and it was the perfect way to celebrate our little LEGO-loving guy! We hosted the party at the park beside our house - it has a fun new play structure and lots of green space and trees (and not to mention easy to set up at since we don't have to haul things very far!) I set up little picnic tables for the kids, our old bounce house (the one everyone has - and probably the ONLY party that it will EVER “match the decor” at hahah), a table for the food+cake, and lots of outdoor activities - like mini sticks, soccer nets, frisbees, bubbles and sidewalk chalk. The weather was great (thank goodness!) and I was very happy to be able to entertain 16 kids outdoors and not in my house!

DECOR

To try and keep the set up minimal - I combined the snack table and the backdrop by using this table-mounted decor rod. I cut 4 strips of canvas drop cloth, hemmed the sides, sewed a pole pocket on the top, and painted them yellow, green and blue to match the invitation design. Then I added craft foam circles to make them look like giant lego pieces! And of course, I added the red Lego-logo “ETHAN” sign and number 6 sign to top it off!

1 - 1-stud storage brick (yellow) | 2 - 1-Stud Round Storage Brick (white) | 3 - 2-stud storage brick (green) | 4 - LEGO boy storage head (small) | 5 - blue & white striped umbrella | 6 - LEGO Classic Medium Creative Brick Box | 7 - small metal table (yellow) | 8 - blue display cabinet | 9 - balloons: yellow, blue, green, red | 10 - red shelf unit

KIDS’ TABLES

The picnic set up was a quick DIY (thanks to my husband!) using some old IKEA desk tops that we already had, and adding some legs made from 2x4s. It’s always nice for the guests to have a spot to sit and have snacks/cake, and not having to come up with 16 chairs was a huge win! I set out a few outdoor cushions for them to sit on, and added washable rugs underneath as well.

For the tabletops - I made a place setting for each guest using a LEGO base plate, blue paper plates, green napkins, and added a clear plate on top with a LEGO head vinyl decal. I added the guests’ names to the lego brick juice boxes (wrapped with coloured paper and craft foam circles) so that they could find their spot (and their juice!) and come-and-go throughout the party. I also set out containers of LEGO across the table for the kids to build stuff with, as well as colouring sheets and markers.

Lastly, I strung a HAPPY BIRTHDAY banner across the trees, and used a beach umbrella in the middle for a little extra shade.

FAVOURS

I absolutely LOVE putting together favours for parties, but instead of doing a goody bag with lots of small items, I opted to just send each guest home with a lego polybag set (tucked inside lego brick containers I found at dollarama!) I used my cricut to add the guests’ names to the containers with vinyl, and stacked them all up on a shelf beside the food table. I also made a yellow 6-stud brick pinata - so the kids also got a little bag of candy too!

FOOD

So I am not a “super awesome” baker, but little kids are pretty easy to please! I normally make my kids’ birthday cakes myself, so for this one I did a confetti cake (yes, from a box mix) with yellow buttercream frosting. I added a lego “happy birthday” topper, and a custom minifig that I designed to look just like Ethan! (it’s actually so fun - you can make your own in the Minifigure Factory) I also designed few customized treat toppers for the mini chocolate cupcakes (you can download them here). I also made the fondant cookies - but this time I realized that I could 3D print cookie cutter files?! (I’ve been 3D printing things for parties at our local library for years, but this is NEXT LEVEL) So I found files for the little minifigures, minifigure heads, and 6-stud bricks. BUT THEN!! I used this online cookie-cutter generator to make the lego-font number 6 cookie cutter! I used this chocolate sugar cookie recipe and they turned out so cute! I’m hooked. Why is 3D printing so fun?

For other snacks, I wanted to stick to pre-packaged things (warm, outdoors, dirty hands…you get it) that matched the colour scheme. So - I set out individual Pringles chip packs (red and green), MadeGood granola bars (yellow and blue), and rice krispies (blue).

So I guess that’s it for Ethan’s LEGO party at the park!
