My kids have loved watching Bluey for a while - so I just couldn’t resist creating our own “Dewey” version for Drew’s 2nd birthday! (we’ve been calling him Dewey since he was a baby!) But once I started looking for party inspo - I really only found a ton of blue+orange themed parties highlighting the characters. But after seeing MANY of the episodes with my kids (and reading lots of bluey books) - I have always found the show to be saturated with so many other colours - like yellows, greens, reds, pinks and purples too. I always need a colour scheme nailed down before I can start planning a party - so I decided so go with a colourful palette of blue, yellow, green and orange for most of the decor and design elements. Let’s get into it!

THE INVITATION

I always begin my party planning with designing the invitation! It always helps to nail down the overall vibe that I’m going for, and really forces me to commit to a colour scheme early on! That way - the invitation can sort of be my guide, and I use it to create the rest of the details - like decor elements, signage, cake and treat toppers, favour tags and packaging, and pretty much anything else I can think of! But for this party - I was struggling early on to get going on a design, because anything I looked up for “inspo” seemed really redundant and felt a little too “commercial” to me. So, I decided to dig out my pencil crayons and just draw the characters myself! It was really fun to add my own illustrations to the invitation - and it finally felt like the “dewey” version of Bluey that I was going for!

The DECOR

Since we were hosting the party at our home, I wanted to surprise the birthday boy with a fun ball pit to play in! I rented this adorable ball pit (from Dreamland Rentals) and it was the perfect size - small enough to fit in our living room, but plenty big enough for kiddos to actually play in! I would say it was a big hit with Drew, and the other kids all loved it too! I tossed in some bluey +bingo squishmallows, and a few inflatable pool rings too to add more fun!

I also wanted something to sort of hide our fireplace/create a backdrop just so that the party maybe didn’t feel soooo living-roomy? And I stumbled upon this playful little felt room divider from IKEA - I loved the rounded tops, and the yellow was the perfect pop of colour!

With the set-up being in our living room - I found ways to swap out our current decor for Bluey party decorations! The first thing I wanted to do was change out the artwork in the frames that we have hanging on the wall. So, to complement the hand-sketched vibe of the invitation, I bought a few Bluey colouring books and ripped out a bunch of pages. The kids and I had fun colouring them, and then I collaged them (along with some un-coloured pages too) on top of a poster board to fit into the frames!

In the spirit of really taking things too far - I recreated the fun artwork that’s in Bluey’s living room and uploaded it to display on my Frame TV!

The Table

I also decorated our dining room, using the table to feature the birthday cake, and some party treats and snacks. I made a felt “DEWEY” sign with my cricut that I attached to this super sweet felt house-shaped canopy, added a light green tablecloth that I folded in half, and a green striped runner. I also stacked up assorted donuts with custom treat toppers that I made (you can download them and make your own here!)

For the cake (made by yours truly) - I kept it super simple with a light blue buttercream frosting, and added a assortment of handmade toppers to decorate it: a felt “happy birthday”, a few felt clouds, and a cute birthday bunting - which was actually a mini version of the one that I made to hang above the table! (If you look closely it’s also on the invitation!)

I wanted to add a few bluey-ish details to to the room, so I cut blue poster board into strips to create a little “fence” along the wall that was vaguely similar to the fence around Bluey’s house! Then, I hung a white + yellow striped curtain on the window behind the table set up, resembling the one in Bluey’s kitchen!

Of course, I obviously had to make custom cookies - I couldn’t resist 3D printing a custom cookie cutter to make the “Dewey” cookie, a few bingo and bluey character ones, simple #2’s, and the standard “bluey” logo as well.

THE KIDS SNACK TABLE

I used our coffee table to set up a little picnic snack area (its the perfect height to sit up to it with a cushion on the floor!). First, I added yellow striped table runner that I made, then set the table with these cute reusable bamboo Bluey snack plates with a larger blue plate under each one. For the snacks, I made each guest a little snack container with their with their own “bluey style” name on it!

THE BALLOONS

I’m always looking for fun new party supplies but when I stumbled upon these reusable PVC balloons from PartyAire I was SO EXCITED to try them! You literally just inflate with an air pump and in seconds you have the perfect party balloon garland! (I used 2 packs of white, 1 blueberry, and 1 nude) Then, once the party is over - you just deflate them and store them until your next party. I really love that they have a true “round shape” that regular balloons just don’t have, and the smell of balloons has always been a little off-putting to me so you get to skip that with these too! I think they would be IDEAL for an outdoor party too - much more resiliant in the hot sun or wind! Another thing that I love about them is that each bundle is actually 3 separate pieces (that you attach with clear elastic bands before inflating), but that means you can mix and match your colours and create endless colour combinations and customize your balloon garlands however you want! AND they have little clear hooks already attached so it makes hanging them up super easy. I think I need to start collecting them in every colour!

THE FAVOURS

I kept the party favours pretty simple for this party, and just used brown kraft paper bags. To customize them a bit, I printed out these “Hammerbarn” labels that I made and glued them onto the front. Inside each bag was a few little things from various Bluey episodes: Rita’s Beans (little jars of Jelly Beans with a custom label on top), a sticky gecko, a keepy uppy balloon, and “sleepy time” glow in the dark stars. Obviously we had to play “pass the parcel” and between each layer I just put a few of dollarbucks that I 3D printed, so I’m not sure if that counts as Lucky’s dad’s rules or not (IYKYK).
