hearts & crafts for valentine's day
For Valentine’s Day this year - I set up a little “Hearts & Crafts” party to spend the afternoon making crafts, and eating chocolate and heart-shaped sugar cookies! I mean who doesn’t love a good crafternoon! Lauren and I spent our time heart collages, and Ethan also worked on painting a ceramic heart-shaped cake!
HEART COLLAGE CRAFT
Supplies:
Foam or paper doily hearts
cardboard
streamers or crepe paper
tacky glue or glue stick
assorted things to add to your collage: magazine cut-outs, stickers, gems, buttons, ribbon, felt-cut-outs, yarn, glitter, stamps, etc
Instructions:
Cut out a cardboard heart a about the same size (or a little smaller) than your foam/paper doily heart.
To make the ruffled edging, apply glue around the perimeter of the cardboard heart and start gathering/scrunching your streamer/crepe paper around the edge.
Next, glue your foam/paper doily heart in the middle of the cardboard heart to cover up the glued edge of the streamer ruffle. Now you’re ready to start collaging!
Starting with largest items first, start adding layers to create your collage. We found a lot of magazine cut-out words like “love” or “best friends”, but you could also handwrite a poem or saying onto cardstock and add it to your collage. We finished our collages with smaller details like tiny buttons, heart-shaped gems, and bows.
That’s it! We had fun trying different colour combos with the streamers (Lauren even did a double-layer of ruffles on one of hers!), and we also took yarn and wove it through the lace edging of the foam heart. The best party about this craft is that the options are endless and you can make each one different and personal. If I had more time, I think printing photos of friends/loved ones would have been a really cute to add as well!
I made this “hearts & crafts” banner with my Cricut using cardstock and the same foam hearts that we were used for our collage craft! You can download the SVG file here to make your own!
