first day of school celebration

It’s time to head back to school and that means we celebrate the same way we do every year - with a fun and festive breakfast set up to kick off the first day of school with excitement and fun! Our kids are headed to grades 2 and 5 this year and we are excited to see how much they grow and change throughout another busy school year.

For the set up, I hung this reusable cloth lined paper banner on the window - and added the “first day of school” letters that I made using a mix of felt and cardstock that I had on hand. As always, I print out these DIY flags for each of them (you can find them all here!) Then, I stuck them in a jar filled with crayons to create a little stand for them!

To set the table, I started with this mustard-yellow linen tablecloth, and added these trays that are giving major cafeteria lunch tray vibes (in the best way), with a stack of back to school-themed books. Using a lined-paper whiteboard I found at the dollar store as a sort of placemat, I then layered a grey plate with a yellow bowl on top - and these pretty dessert coupes to really elevate that morning bowl of cheerios! (we always get the apple cinnamon ones for the first day of school!). And of course, the cutest little crayon-shaped paper napkins and colourful flatware.

I made the little apple Piñatas to add a fun surprise to each of the place settings - I’ve made many piñatas over the years and it’s the easiest DIY! I also added their names to a ruler using my Cricut for a personalized “place card” of sorts.
