our little backyard summer fiesta!

While we were spending a few weeks at my in-law’s condo in Lake Country, I decided to throw a little Mexican fiesta for the kids (my nieces and nephew were supposed to go on a trip to Mexico this spring, but it was cancelled) so we brought Mexico to them instead!

I set up this fun and colourful picnic table for all 9 (NINE!) cousins to sit at for their taco supper. Earlier that afternoon, we painted rocks that we collected at the beach to make cactus place settings at the table. I labelled some mini terracotta pots with each of their names (using white letter stickers) so that they knew which spot was theirs!

I also made them each a mini cactus piñata (using this tutorial) you just pull the string at the bottom and the candy falls out! I liked this idea because they added a fun element to the table decor, and this way there was no fighting over the candy as everyone got their own piñata!

I found the little square wooden plates at Sobeys (so random!) but I paired them with a cloth napkin to add a little texture to each place setting.

For the kids’ drinks, I set out an assortment of Jarritos sodas, and used little mason jars with paper straws and wooden stir sticks that I tied yarn to to add a little colourful fiesta flare! We just added ice to each of the jars before dinner so that the kids could pour their own soda and pick which ever flavour they wanted. The adults had margaritas, which I had never actually made from scratch (I’m no mixologist!) but they delicious and refreshing on a hot summer evening!

For the decor, I made the papel picado banner using Amber Thrane’s wonderful tutorial! It was so easy to follow. It felt like I was making a bunch of paper snowflakes!

I also made the tassel garland with colourful yarn I had and wooden beads -I just strung everything onto twine.

We finished off the night with an outdoor movie (Coco of course!)
